The Leinster town is located at the northern goldfields area of Western Australia. The town is 968 km northeast of the Perth and 4 km east od the Goldfields Highway,in the division of Leonara Local Government Area. It had a population of 1,098 at the 2001 census. It was named from the nearby Leinster Downs Station. The Agnew Gold Mining Company established the town in 1976 for its workers at its nickel mine as a dormitory. Leinster provides facilities like supermarket,service station,tavern,primary school and post office. And the facilities for sports include a 18 hole golf course and an indoor sports centre. The Leinster Nickel Operation has become a part of the BHP Billiton Nickel West business group.The operation produces 40,000 - 45,000 tons of nickel per year and has 992 workers employed under it.The Leinster is a open shelter in the Northern Goldfields with a population of 1,500. Its one of the features is the number of trees that surrounds the Shopping Centre and the Caravan Park. It alsovreflects the planning and the efforts made to build a modern mining town.

The Agnew and Lawlers are the two nearby historic towns and you can also visit the rock formations in the east of the town. The town extends 370 km north of Kalgoorlie in Western Australia's northern goldfields. It is also known as the 'home of the wedge tailed eagle'. Leinster includes large sheep stations and provides a good look at the pastoral area and is famous for its nickel mining,which was initially a goldminign town. Some of the picnic sites are also available at the creeks on the old and the new roads. The wildlife in Leinster and its surroundings includes kangaroos, emus and wedge tailed eagles.To provide shelter to the travlellers the town has Caravan Park and other hotels or motels.

Leinster mining began in 1897 due to the start of work on alluvial gold deposit by east murchison united company In 1989, WMC resources purchased the operation and it was renamed as Leinster nickel operations. The town includes 283 houses,a caravan park, 800 servant quarters and includes 700 people and 700 fly in fly out persons. The town also includes service stations, cofee shop hairdressing salon.
