Mining companies are in a continuous hiring mode of truck drivers. Many of the large mining companies have their own training schools/programs. Before you can be employed as a dump truck driver at a mining company, you are required to meet certain minimum requirements. All the requirements are usually taken care in the trainee program, which almost every dump truck driver has to go through at some stage before getting an employment as a dump truck driver.
Dump truck trainees have to go through an extensive classroom program, which focuses on rules and regulations to be followed while driving. The basics of the operation of a dump truck are also taught to the trainees. The trainees also learn about different inspections they have to perform before and after the trip.
After the classroom training, the trainee is taken over the mine site with a driver trainer for about 120 hours of driving. During this practical training, apart from learning various driving maneuvers, the trainee also learns about other tasks that are to be performed by a truck driver like, pre and post trip inspections, looking for hazards, night driving, hooking and unhooking trailer, managing loading space on the truck, and bobtailing.
