An Australian coal mining organisation called Rio Tinto Coal Australia (RTCA) is a part of the worldwide Rio Tinto Group. Hail Creek, Kestrel and clermont mines works under RTCA in Queensland.

Coal and Alied's operations at Mount Thorley Warkworth, Hunter Valley Operations and Bengalla works under RTCA in New South Wales.

Hail Creek Mine

Hail Creek Mine is situated in the Bowen Basin 40 km North-West of Nebo and 120 km south-west of Mackay. A huge quantity (upto 8 million) of cooking coal is produced which is used in steel production. In 1968 Hail Creek's resources were discovered and In 1970, project feasibility work was progressed. The joint venture partners decide to develop the mine in 2001. Hail Creek mining planning and construction took two years to finally open in 2003.

On the behalf of the joint venture partners, Rio Tinto Coal Australia (82 per cent), Marubeni Coal (6.66 per cent), Sumisho Coal Development (3.34 per cent) and Nippon Steel Corporation (8 per cent), the various operations are managed by Rio Tinto Coal Australia. Hail Creek Mine produces upto 8 million tonnes of hard cooking coal per annum in Asia and Europe. The various resources of Hail Creek Mine were discovered in 1968. Hail creek Mine started construction in 2001.

There are 436 employees that work in shifts to keep the mine operational throughout the week, working 24 hours a day and seven days a week. Bowen Basin that is 600 km long and 250 km wide is a major producer of coal. In 2007, the mine comprises of 500 employees and contractors.

There are two seams that produces coal; The Elphinstone Seam having a thickness of 6.4 metres and Hynds Seam 8.3 metre thick. More than six million tonnes of hard and semi soft coking coal was produced in 2008. The town was completed before time, was a 460 million dollar project, comprises of dragline, coal preparation plant and a railway line to the Goonyella rail line. The resources were found in 1968 and in 1970s feasibility was performed.

In August 2003, coal was railed for first time for the Export, 175 km to the south of Mackay, to Dalrymple Bay Coal Termnal. The mine also ensures that all the environmntal and security checks were followed so as to minimise the impact of the mine on the environment and ensures effective rehabilitation of the land.
