Broken Hill Mining Jobs

Broken Hill is a very historic mining town which has been called the 'Oasis of the West’, 'Silver City' and the 'Capital of the Outback'. It is over 1100 Km west of Sydney and surrounded by semi-desert. This mining town is also very popular amongst Australian artists. There are many interesting places including magnificent scenery, Mootwingee National Park, Aboriginal rock art and stencils, Silverton Goal, fishing and camping at Menindee Lakes which supplies water to the town and is part a storage scheme on the Darling River. The town still mines for Silver, lead and zinc today.

Being a mining community there are numerous mines and museums related to mining. One can easily get to experience what life is like working down a mine. There are also several other museums around the city telling the history of the area, which are very interesting.

Broken Hill is a town mainly dominated by the mining industry. The mines founded on the Broken Hill Ore Deposit - the world's richest lead-zinc ore body - have provided the majority of direct employment and indirect employment in the city. The Broken Hill Proprietary Company became Australia's largest mining company, and later became part of the world's largest mining company, BHP Billiton.

The mining town was built on precious metals. The town once had the world’s richest deposits of lead, zinc and silver although mining (particularly zinc and lead) still yields around two million tonnes annually.

The advent of mining equipment powered by diesel in the late 1940s and the move toward mechanised underground mining resulted in lower labor utilisation per tonne of ore recovered. This led the workforce in the mines shrink. Another factor in the shrinking of workforce size has been the consolidation of mining leases and operators, from several dozen to just two main operators at present.

During the 1990s, there was a decline in the labour force due to low metal prices. This also led to the failure of Pasminco Ltd (miner). But the recent resurgence in metal prices has returned the sole existing operator, Perilya Limited, to profitability and prompted Consolidated Broken Hill Limited to advance development of the previously unmined Western Lodes and Centenary Lodes. This has involved creation of over 70 jobs during development.

Broken Hill has always been and still is more reliant upon the mining industry as a source of employment although it is planning to encourage itself as a destination for tourism and its artistic credentials.
