Boilermakers are trained craftsmen who produces steel fabrications from plates and sections. The name Boilermker is originated from craftsmen who would fabricate boilers Boilermaking.

Boilermaking

The boilermakers are used in repairing, repiping, and retubing steam and hot water boilers are used for heating and domestic hot water in commercial buildings and large families. These boilers are also referred to as pressure vessels. A storage tank called pressure vessel is used to operate at a pressure above 15 p.s.i.g. The two main tasks of boilermakers involve cutting or gauging of steel plate and tubes and secondly, attaching and mending the cut sections of tubes and steel plates. The above mentioned operations makes use of Oxyacetylene gas torch for cutting and gauging and Gas tungsten arc welding (GTAW, also referred to as Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) and Shielded Metal Arc Welding (SMAW).

R Stamp Welding

The National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessel Inspectors and The ASME of United States uses R Stamp Welding which deals in Boiler repair. R stamp welds undergo rigorous testing procedure in order to test and certify the quality of their weld join. Welds are identified by stamping their welder number adjacent to their completed weld with a set of steel stencils.

Power Piping

Boilermaker is originated from the industrial blacksmith and referred to as "boilersmith" in early 1800s. Boilermakers started using iron over wood for construction purpose and thus came the involvement of Boilermakers in the shipbuilding industry. Iron boilers were easily constructed in place of wooden steamship in the shipyards and it becomes really easy and cheaper to construct a ship. This technique is capable of building huge structures that are made from iron and latter from steel.

Application

Boilermaking is basically involved in repairing stress fractures, leaks, rust and corrosion. It also involves re-fitting a boiler in a seagoing vessel or remodelling of steam plant.
