Blackwater Jobs
Blackwater is the major town of a significant coal mining area in Central Queensland, Australia. Blackwater is known as the Coal Capital of Queensland and the newly built; nine million dollar Blackwater International Coal Centre showcases the Central Highlands Coal Industry for the world. At the 2006 census, Blackwater had a population of 5,031. Six major open cut coal mines dot the landscape surrounding the town and provide its main employment opportunities. The town is also situated close to the Blackdown Tableland National Park which lies to the south. Blackwater is supposedly named after the Blackwater Creek which apparently was first observed to flow with black water, this may have been caused by tree roots growing into the creek. Coal deposits were discovered there by Ludwig Leichhardt in 1845.
John Holland, through its acquisition of CE Marshall and Sons Earthmoving Pty Ltd, will provide mining services to the Blackwater Coal Mine for BHP Billiton Mitsubishi Alliance. The mine is located 24km south of the town of Blackwater and 315km west of the port of Gladstone, Queensland. The Blackwater Coal Mine is one of the largest open-cut coal mines in Australia, producing approximately 14 million tonnes of coking and thermal coal a year. The coal is sold to markets such as South and East Asia, the Middle East, the Americas, India and Australia. The Blackwater International Coal Centre provides amazing perspectives to the coal mining industry as it showcases the Australian coal industry to the world for the first time. The Blackwater International Coal Centre arose from a vision instigated by the Duaringa Shire Council in 2003 which was supported and developed by major coal producers BMA Blackwater mine and Wesfarmers Curragh Coal. The Blackwater International Coal Centre offers the public a unique view into the operations, past and present, of Australia’s coal mining industry. The Centre provides high quality amenities for the local community and delivers significant employment and economic benefits. Incorporating an education and community centre, exhibition space, a theatre cinema and café, it is expected the Blackwater International Coal Centre will become a social and cultural hub for the people of the town and surrounding area.
